1. Such a paradoxic innervation may be due to an abnormal contact of eye muscle nerves with the external rectus, such as a contact only with branches of the oculomotor nerve (Duane III) or a double contact with the abducens nerve and branches of the oculomotor nerve (Duane II, Duane I).

Afin d'expliquer cette innervation paradoxale on discute la possibilité d'une innervation anormale du droit externe avec des branches du IIIème nerf seul (Duane III) ou une innervation double avec des branches du VIème nerf et du IIIème nerf (Duane II, Duane I).
